Q: In your opinion, the curriculum of higher education should be innovated. Can you tell us why?

A: The knowledge offered by the majority of higher education institutions is targeted for Job Market. Sophisticated computers, internet, genetically modified food, and stem cells, all these things have changed the whole world and market economy dramatically. Accordingly, the curriculum should also be modified. Only up-to-date textbooks, teaching staff with relevant working experience, teaching mode suited to our commercial society are conducive to cultivation of interdisciplinary talents.

Q: Do you mean teaching staff that have actual working experience are better than those professors who have been engrossed in academic research?
A: Not exactly. It depends on your purpose. If your goal is academic research, such as the effect of macro-economy to the allocation of limited national resource, academic-oriented professors are preferable. On the other hand, if your goal is better platform in your future job, relevancy of the subject to the job market is crucial. For instance, companies need personnel who are proficient in marketing, management, computer, basic accounting knowledge etc. Lecturers who have actual working experience are the most competent ones to achieve this effect. Combination of theory and practice is what we pursue.

Q: Can you talk something about bilingual education in your college? How do you implement?
A: Most of our new students have been learning in Chinese language environment before they came to our college. Now, some of our professional courses adopt English textbooks and are taught by foreign teachers. At the same time, students must attend intensive English courses which are divided into 6 levels. Only after the students have achieved level 4 at least can they be put into professional courses taught by foreign staff.

Q: Does bilingual education make any difference to the students?
A: The momentum of the global economy has been transferring from the west to the east since the beginning of 21st century. As the fastest developing country in the world, China receives ever more foreign companies every year, which in turn leads to incessant demand for bilingual talents. Our graduates are specifically targeted for these companies. Some of our graduates are also needed by privately-owned enterprises and some have been successfully employed by government agencies.

Q: Marketing-oriented teaching is one of your characteristics. How is it different from product-oriented teaching?
A: Product-oriented teaching is the mode of 20th century universities.
These universities decide everything for the students, from syllabus, curriculum, to teaching mode. They allow little modification to their courses. Marketing-oriented teaching is free from this kind of defective. Teaching mode which is out of joint with the market. In marketing- oriented teaching, syllabus and teaching mode have close connections with the market. Process of the students’ learning is closely monitored. Institutions that have adopted marketing-oriented teaching are now flourishing which is in sharp contrast with the ones that have adopted product-oriented institutions.
